Drum for Change with Greg Whitt

Welcome to Drum for Change!
Our hearts beat in rhythm, we breathe in rhythm, we walk in rhythm. Everyone has rhythm, but not everyone remembers how to outwardly express it! Modern society has conditioned us to listen to the radio, buy cd’s, and go to concerts rather than make music of our own. Drumming can free the rhythm!
Drum for Change in Raleigh, NC is dedicated to using the universal language of percussive music for creative self-expression. In doing so, I encourage cultural awareness, embrace diversity, and promote harmony through rhythm.
My goal is to promote communication and active engagement among all participants regardless of age, gender, race, religion, or sexual orientation, to help foster a sense of community, to promote health and well-being, and to encourage positive interpersonal interaction.
DCF CON GREATEST LEARNINGS

Now that I've had a few days to process, I thought I would share some of the magic from the annual international Drum Circle Facilitators Conference held last weekend in Myrtle Beach. This year's event had special emphasis on Native American-inspired traditions. It also had a lot of focus on integrating song and movement into the drum circle. There were lots of new presenters this year, and about 25% of those who attended were brand new to the conference as well. This was the fifth annual event, so it was a great home-coming for me to reconnect with people I haven't seen in a couple of years.

This weekend I'm making my third pilgrimage to the Annual Drum Circle Facilitators International Conference. This year's conference is again held at the beautiful Ocean Creek Resort (www.oceancreek.com) in North Myrtle Beach, SC. In fact, it's such a great location that so far three out of five of these conferences have been held there. The event is hosted by the Drum Circle Facilitators Guild.

Drums are called membranophones.
This means they have a skin that vibrates. This vibration creates sound and sound is simply energy.
We all know that energy is that magical stuff which makes up the universe. When we infuse sound with intention, we then propagate energy that paves the way for the orld we wish to experience.
Join Gregory Whitt of DRUM for CHANGE and develop rhythmic empowerment for yourself. Each session will focus on drumming with intent. And each month we’ll explore a different modality through rhythm.

Many families are tightening their belts and trying to keep activities local and walletfriendly, and luckily for them, Gregory Whitt has a fun alternative to an expensive night out at the movies. All you need is $5 ($10 for families), an open mind and a little bit of rhythm.
Whitt facilitates and organizes the Raleigh Drum Circle the area’s largest recreational music-making organization. Formed in 2002 with 12 members, the group’s Yahoo website now has over 300 participants.“It’s been awesome to watch the Raleigh Drum Circle and other groups evolve and grow in the area,” says Whitt. The group’s seventh anniversary jam last September at Lake Johnson drew over 70 people and its monthly meeting there continues to attract a large crowd.
