GIVING BACK - TITHING FOR CHANGE

Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.

~Leo Buscaglia

I try to set a personal goal of tithing once a month. This month I had the opportunity to donate a gift certificate for a drum lesson or healing session to Nancy’s Butterfly Fund. Nancy’s Butterfly Fund will be dedicated to helping women and children free themselves from the dangers of domestic violence. Many may remember the news surrounding the death of Nancy Cooper last July. The inaugural event to raise money for Nancy’s Butterfly Fund will be held on June 13, 2009 at LifeTime Fitness in Cary. An avid runner, she was a member of the club. The fundraiser will include a silent auction, live music, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres.

Nancy Cooper created Nancy’s Butterfly Fund to provide financial assistance to women and their children leaving abusive relationships. Nancy’s Butterfly Fund will be managed by Interact, a renowned local nonprofit agency that provides safety, support and awareness to victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Organizers say their goal is to minimize the financial obstacles that may prevent women from leaving violent unsafe homes. The fund will provide financial assistance for individuals and families participating in Interact’s programs and services. Specifically, the fund may help with apartment and utility deposits, childcare, education, food, transportation and other basic financial needs and services. Those who know me well may recall that fifteen years ago I was a police officer in the military. One of my most moving experiences was answering a call related to domestic violence and sexual assault. More often than you’d think, we’re all in positions to help in some small way....

Do you know of an opportunity for drum-based tithing for a worthy non-profit organization? Let’s get you on the calendar!
