Many families are tightening their belts and trying to keep activities local and walletfriendly, and luckily for them, Gregory Whitt has a fun alternative to an expensive night out at the movies. All you need is $5 ($10 for families), an open mind and a little bit of rhythm.

Whitt facilitates and organizes the Raleigh Drum Circle the area’s largest recreational music-making organization. Formed in 2002 with 12 members, the group’s Yahoo website now has over 300 participants.“It’s been awesome to watch the Raleigh Drum Circle and other groups evolve and grow in the area,” says Whitt. The group’s seventh anniversary jam last September at Lake Johnson drew over 70 people and its monthly meeting there continues to attract a large crowd.

Beat of the Heart

Takaaki Iwabu, Staff Photographer, published a great photo story about the Raleigh Drum Circle’s 7th Annual Birthday Bash held on September 21, 2009.  More than 100 people attended this showcase of percussion performance featuring song, dance, storytelling, and drumming from around the world.  Thanks to the generous support of Raleigh Parks & Recreation.

The Raleigh drumming community meets monthly at Lake Johnson Park each third Monday of the month.

drumSTRONG Closing Ceremony

drumSTRONG Closing Ceremony

DrumSTRONG was a 27-hour drumming marathon that I coordinated with ten other facilitators.  The circle was webcast and at 8am Sunday morning we simulcast with another circle in Malaysia led by my mentor Arthur Hull.  It was a famous first - while marking time here in the US, we were able to sync the two circles.  When I initiated a stop for both circles, it was the first time ever that two drum circles were simultaneously led from different sides of the globe!  Click to watch the closing ceremonies.

This slide show was created for use at a state convention.  The pictorial tells what this whole drum circle thing is really about through imagery of happy people drumming together along with choice tidbits of information.  It does contain music, so please be patient while it loads.
